Creating in three dimensions

intro image for craftweek feature

Welcome to our Craft feature

This week we're diving into craft, making textile, cylinder and plaster puppets, calico bags, worry dolls and Arpilleras. These activities give children a wide range of skills in thinking in three dimensions whilst encouraging them to push their manual dexterity creating objects that they can be proud of.

Textile puppets are
simple to make

This project is designed to suit normal classroom conditions and illustrates how to adapt the classroom to create the working space required. Puppetry is sometimes neglected by teachers as planning and sourcing materials takes some time, but this can be solved by planning ahead and by asking parents to contribute recyclable materials in advance.

Paper Maché Masks tutorial

Knowing the purpose of a mask helps you understand its significance. Masks have been designed to depict animals, characters in drama, good and evil spirits, and mythological characters. In ancient Greek comedies and tragedies, for example, actors used masks when playing different characters to conceal their own identity and take on the identity portrayed by the mask.
