Summer is great, all the cold weather and the snow are gone. The trees look as green as they will ever look, the food is plenty, especially the fruit and vegetables. We dress differently and we go to especial places on vacation/holidays. Some people go to the ocean, some other go to the countryside, some other people stay home relaxing.
Colour is a great feature in summer, there are colourful flowers and trees everywhere, in the country side and in the cities. It is a wonderful season to paint and draw with colour in mind.

Painting and Drawing
There is a lot to discover in summer, one of our favourite art projects for summer is to draw and paint fruit. We have painted watermelons, mangoes, corn and other produce from outdoors markets.
In our classroom we have a collection of photographs of nice fresh produce markets like the notorious Boqueria, in Barcelona and many of the local markets.Students love to work from the photos and draw/paint the arrangements of fruit, and vegetables, cheeses and breads, sausages and other small goods hanging at the front of the stalls. The pictures are great references for the students to try colour mixing, repetition of shapes like bananas and oranges, textures found on different fruit and other fresh market produce. The favourite pictures in the classroom are always the pictures of colourful arrangements of lollies/candy and the colourful drinks made out of fresh fruits.
The Ocean
We have also painted our experiences by the ocean, people swimming, people playing on the beach, people walking dogs. We have a nice collection of shells and the students have used them to create natural formations, small installations and to draw from them.

Pictures of sticks and bark found by the ocean.
A walk on the beach is a great thing to do to find treasures like shells, drift wood and sticks, pebbles, bits of bark, foliage and wild flowers that can become the inspiration for drawings with ink, watercolours, pens and pencils.

Pen and watercolour drawings of treasures found on the beach.
Drawing foliage and flowers is fun, if students go for a walk by the ocean or the country side, there always be leaves, small branches and sticks to draw and to be inspired.

In summer there is a wonderful abundance of flowers. We celebrate summer by painting and drawing colourful flowers and magic gardens.
